FreeVoice

Because communication is a human right,
not a subscription service.

$299
Per year. For an app. To let your child speak.
  • $8,000–$12,000 for their dedicated hardware devices
  • Speech output deliberately disabled when subscriptions lapse
  • Families who already paid a one-time fee — forced onto subscriptions after updates
  • Insurance fights lasting months while children go without
  • Schools whose district licenses expire mid-year
  • Families in developing countries completely priced out

Some companies built a wall between disabled children and their own voice.

AAC — Augmentative and Alternative Communication — is the category of tools that let nonverbal and minimally verbal people communicate. Symbol boards, text-to-speech, picture grids. The technology itself is not complex or expensive to build.

But the dominant players in this space have turned it into a subscription business. They know that families will pay anything. They know that schools will fight insurance. They know that the alternative is silence.

We watched this happen to someone we love. And we decided to do something about it.

$0
FreeVoice costs nothing.
Now. Tomorrow. Forever.
"We have a nonverbal child. We know what it feels like to watch a company hold communication hostage for a monthly fee. We know the fear when a subscription lapses. We know the rage."

We're Parents First

FreeVoice wasn't born in a boardroom. It was born from the daily reality of raising a nonverbal child and watching the tools they depend on exist behind paywalls that grow higher every year.

💻

We're Builders

Shellcraft Labs is an AI-powered software studio. We build apps for a living. When we looked at what these companies charge versus the actual cost of the technology — we were furious. And we had the skills to fix it.

🌍

We're Not Stopping

This isn't a charity project or a side experiment. We are building FreeVoice to be a complete, production-grade AAC platform — feature-for-feature what TD Snap does — and releasing every single bit of it for free, forever.

🔓

Open Source, Always

Every line of code is public. Every SLP, every parent, every developer anywhere in the world can look at it, use it, improve it, translate it. The code belongs to the community. The voice belongs to the child.

Why This Matters

Communication is not a luxury.

Here is the reality that families, SLPs, and schools live with every single day.

🧒

1 in 12 children have a communication disorder

Millions of children worldwide use AAC tools to communicate. Not as a convenience — as their only way of expressing needs, feelings, and thoughts to the people they love.

💸

Cost is the #1 barrier to access

Insurance doesn't cover software subscriptions. School budgets are fixed. Families in lower-income households and developing countries have no path to these tools at current prices. The paywall is a communication wall.

🔇

When subscriptions lapse, voices go silent

Families and schools have reported their child's AAC app stopping mid-day when a subscription payment failed. This is not a billing dispute. It is a child who cannot speak, suddenly silenced by software.

🌐

This problem is global

A nonverbal child in rural India or rural Georgia faces the same need and an even higher barrier. AAC software that costs $0 and runs on any device with a browser changes the entire picture — anywhere in the world.

🏫

Schools deserve better tools

Special education teachers shouldn't need to chase grants to buy software their students need to communicate. FreeVoice gives every classroom, every IEP, every SLP access to professional-grade AAC tools at zero cost.

Early communication changes everything

Research is clear: early AAC access dramatically improves language development, reduces frustration behaviors, and improves quality of life — for children and their entire families. Every day without access is a day that matters.

A full AAC board, always ready.

FreeVoice gives every child a complete symbol communication board with 500+ symbols across 11 categories — food, feelings, school, social, body, bedtime and more. Everything organized exactly the way therapists recommend.

  • 🔤
500+ symbols built in — expandable to thousands via ARASAAC, the world's largest free symbol library
  • 💬
Persistent core word bar — the 20 most important words always visible, no matter what category you're in
  • Fast Phrases — one-tap phrases like "I need help" and "I'm done" always reachable
  • 🔊
Real text-to-speech — builds sentences and speaks them aloud using the device's built-in voice engine. Zero cost.

Made for real families.

FreeVoice is built by a parent. It's designed for the reality of daily life — not a demo. Caregivers can customize every board without needing a tech background.

  • 📸
Photo symbols — add a photo of grandma, the family pet, or a favorite snack. Real faces matter.
  • 🎙️
Record your own voice — assign a parent's, sibling's, or teacher's actual voice to any symbol. Hearing mom say "I love you" is irreplaceable.
  • 🔒
Parent Mode — PIN-locked editing so children can't accidentally change their boards
  • 🎨
Skin tone + Fitzgerald colors — representation matters. One click applies your child's skin tone to all symbols.

is tell someone.

FreeVoice only works if families know it exists. Every share reaches a parent who might be fighting for tools their child needs right now.

Why a software studio is giving this away for free.

Shellcraft Labs builds commercial products. We run a real business. But FreeVoice is different — it comes from a place that isn't about business at all.

We have a family member who is nonverbal. We have lived the frustration of watching companies treat a child's ability to communicate as a revenue opportunity. We have seen the subscription renewal notices. We have felt the rage.

We had the skills to build an alternative. So we did. The cost of running FreeVoice is essentially zero — it's a web app hosted on GitHub Pages. There is no business model here. There is no catch. There is no "eventually we'll charge for it."

The code is MIT licensed. Any developer in the world can run their own copy. If Shellcraft Labs ever disappears, the app lives on. That's the point.
